Sleep Schedules by Age: The Complete Guide to Wake Windows, Nap Timing, and Bedtime

baby sleep schedule.

If there’s one thing that can transform your baby’s sleep faster than almost anything else — it’s getting the schedule right.

I’ve worked with families who had beautiful bedtime routines, consistent environments, and genuinely patient approaches – and their babies were still fighting sleep. The missing piece? It’s all in the timing.

WHAT IS A WAKE WINDOW?

A wake window is the amount of time your baby can comfortably stay awake between sleep periods before over-tiredness sets in.

Here’s why it matters: when a baby passes their ideal wake window, their body releases cortisol – a stress hormone – to keep them going. Cortisol makes it significantly harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. More tired does not equal easier sleep. Properly timed tired equals easier sleep.

WAKE WINDOWS AND SCHEDULES BY AGE

0-8 WEEKS

Wake window: 45-60 minutes | Naps: 4-5 per day | Night sleep: 3-4 hour stretches (normal at this age)

Focus on feeding and responding to cues rather than strict timing and schedules for this age.

2-3 MONTHS

Wake window: 60-90 minutes | Naps: 4-5 per day, beginning to consolidate.

A great time to gently introduce the Eat-Play-Sleep cycle.

4-5 MONTHS

Wake window: 1.5-2 hours | Naps: 3-4 per day

The 4-month sleep regression hits here — a normal developmental transition, not a step backward.

6-7 MONTHS

Wake window: 2-2.5 hours | Naps: 2-3 per day (transitioning toward 2)

10-12 hour nights possible with good independent sleep skills.

8-10 MONTHS

Wake window: 2.5-3 hours | Naps: 2 per day

Night sleep: 10-12 hours.

11-14 MONTHS

Wake window: 3-4 hours | Naps: 2 per day (some babies beginning to show readiness for 1)

Night sleep: 11-12 hours.

15-18 MONTHS

Wake window: 4-5 hours | Transitioning from 2 naps to 1

The 2-to-1 nap transition is one of the most disrupted periods for families. Expect 2-3 weeks of adjustment – use an earlier temporary bedtime (sometimes as early as 6pm) to manage over-tiredness.

18 MONTHS-3 YEARS

Wake window: 5-6 hours | 1 nap per day | Night sleep: 10-12 hours

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR TIMING IS OFF

Overtired signs: fights sleep despite being clearly tired, shorter naps, more night wake-ups, more fussy, falls asleep within minutes of being placed down.

Undertired signs: plays happily in crib, long time to settle, short naps, consistent early morning waking.

Just right: sleepy cues appear near wake window end, settles within a reasonable time when placed down.

THE COUNTERINTUITIVE BEDTIME TRUTH

If your baby is waking before 6am, your instinct might be to push bedtime later. In most cases, this will make it worse. Overtired babies wake early. An earlier bedtime — sometimes by 30-60 minutes — often resolves early morning waking within a few days.
