Every mama has Googled it. Usually at 3am, squinting at the phone screen in a dark hallway.
“Why does my baby keep waking up?”
You’ve probably gotten a dozen different answers — teething, hunger, growth spurts, overtiredness, undertiredness. The real answer is both simpler and more hopeful than most of what you’ve read.
Here’s what’s actually happening.
WHY BABIES WAKE AT NIGHT
First, let’s normalize something: ALL babies wake at night. All of them. All humans wake briefly between sleep cycles — it’s a completely normal part of how sleep works.
The difference between a baby who “sleeps through the night” and one who doesn’t isn’t that one wakes up and one doesn’t. It’s that one can put themselves BACK to sleep independently when they surface, and one cannot.
That ability — to fall back to sleep without help — is a skill. And like all skills, it has to be learned.
THE SLEEP ASSOCIATION PROBLEM
When your baby consistently falls asleep in a particular set of conditions — being held, rocked, nursed, or bounced — their brain links those conditions to sleep. Sleep feels safe and possible only in those conditions.
So when they wake between sleep cycles at 2am (which they will, always), they cry out for the same conditions that put them to sleep in the first place.
This is called a sleep association — and it’s the root cause of most nighttime waking in babies past the newborn stage.

THE EAT-PLAY-SLEEP DIFFERENCE
At Fabulous Sleep Solutions, the foundation of everything we do is the Eat-Play-Sleep cycle:
EAT
EAT: Feed your baby within 10 minutes of waking — not at bedtime, not to get them to sleep. Right when they wake up for the day, while they’re alert and hungry.
PLAY
PLAY: Active, upright playtime appropriate to your baby’s age and wake window. This burns energy, aids in digestion, and creates genuine tiredness. This means less spitting up, fewer colicky symptoms and better sleep overall.
SLEEP
SLEEP: Put your baby down FULLY AWAKE. Not drowsy. Not halfway asleep. Awake, calm, and ready. This is where they learn those self-soothing strategies on their own. It’s our job to give them the space to do that.
This cycle breaks the feed-to-sleep association completely. Your baby learns to surface between sleep cycles and settle themselves — because they know how.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU MAKE THE SHIFT
Night 1: The hardest. Normal protest. Hold the boundary.
Night 2: Often similar to night 1.
Night 3: Most families see a real shift.
Nights 4-5: Longer stretches begin.
Week 2: Solid, independent sleep habits forming.
⮕ 3-7 nights. Not weeks. Nights.
*Side note: Sometimes we see a regression between nights 3-5, which is normal. Just keep going!
ONE THING TO TRY TONIGHT
After your baby’s last feeding of the day, give them a short awake period — even 10-15 minutes of quiet interaction. Then place them in the crib while they’re awake. Try it once. See what happens.
